What are the benefits of meditation? And is there a recommended amount of time to meditate to get the most effect?  ~Lily

The benefits of meditation is unlimited and impossible to list. For some, it will improve their physical health. Personally, I have always had a high heart rate of about 100 bpm resting. After I started meditation, my heart rate has dropped to 70 bpm. I had not set out to accomplish this, but it has happened. Others, feel meditation can heal one's mental health. As it helps us to slow down our minds, it helps us de-stress our lives and remember what is most important. Also, meditation helps train one to gain control of oneself emotionally. When things are going great in our lives, we feel we can do anything, and we do not think to do things like meditating, praying and studying religion. But the good times inevitably don't last, and those who have not meditated and trained themselves will not be able to handle the tough times. They will blame the world, others, bad luck and themselves for the bad things that happen. Some will only seek religion in times of crisis and then lose faith when their pleas go unanswered. Meditation, prevents one from falling into this trap. I have not read any quantified amount of time one should meditate in the sutras thus far. As a general rule with all things Buddhist, take the middle road. A beginner might do too little because it is too hard, and a seasoned practitioner might do too much because of the bliss it brings. But meditation is merely one of the three requirements for attaining enlightenment, wisdom and compassion being the others.
Hope this helps. ~Tony
